Dale Vincente (from the Acoma Sky City Pueblo in New Mexico) has been hand painting his beautiful fine line style pottery for many years. He is one of our favorite Native American artists because the hand drawn lines are so intricate. When you look at these up close, you will swear that it could not be done free-hand as he does. Dale even hand crafts his brush from the fibers of the local Yucca plant.

The Indian Wedding Vase Tradition

The wedding vase, which is integral to the culture of many Southwestern Indian tribes, is beautiful in both form and symbolism. The idea is simplicity itself: one vessel with two spouts-just as the lives of the man and wife will be after their wedding day. In the traditional Native American ceremony, pure water is placed in the vase, which is then given to the bride. She drinks from one spout, then turns the vase around and hands it to the groom. He drinks from the other spout. They are then united as one.

The vase is treasured by the couple throughout their married life. It is displayed in their home, and carefully protected. It is never broken, discarded or destroyed. Should one of them outlive the other, the remaining person gives the vase to a couple known to be living a happily married life. The man and wife receiving this gift are greatly honored by it.

Pottery from Dale Vicente of Acoma
Dale Vicente is a southwest artist we recently discovered.  He works with hard fired cast pieces and works his magic with a paint brush made from the Yucca plant.  Dale's mother, Santanna Vicente, passed her skills on to him.  He likes to work in the traditional southwestern Acoma colors of black and rust with fine lines and starbursts.
